Poets and poetry lovers, we welcome you to the twenty ninth session of our poetry open mic at Gaslight Cafe & Music.
FEATURED ACTS:
MUHAMMAD HAJI SALLEH is one of Malaysia’s leading poets. He won the National Literary Award in 1991 and National Laureate Award in 2008. He is now a Professor Emeritus in Universiti Sains Malaysia.
An expert in literary and cultural criticism, he had written several titles including Puitika Sastera Melayu (2000), Romance and Laughter in the Malay Archipelago (2006), Permata di Rumput Gilang: Sastera Sebagai Ruang Bangsa (2008), Ghairah Dunia dalam Empat Baris: Sihir Pantun and Estetikanya (2013). He had also published 15 poetry anthologies in Malay and English. His latest anthology is The Purple Desire of Islands: Selected Poems (2016).
HEERRAA has been singing and performing her orignial, self-composed songs to a wide range of audiences and age groups across Selangor, even having featured shows all the way in Penang! With an interest for singing since 5 years old and performing ever since she was 8, this young star sings about the deeper meanings of life, consciousness and awareness and of course, love.
OPEN MIC-ERS:
ALIAA AMRAN suffers from a not so tragic case of esprit de l'escalier. Poetry is therapy.
IRSYAD NAZRI is a conceptual artist who draws inspiration from Rumi, Hafiz and Saadi in his poetry writing.
JAMAL RASLAN is a spoken word poet who believes that the word is alive.
Words was all EMILY TAN had ever known
UMAR AZIZI says "I like pauses, ikan pauses, pausesaj, menopause
Because it marks a change. When nothing makes much cents"
CAT BROGAN is a poet and spoken word educator who can't get enough of Malaysia
HANA SURADJAT says If you heard someone calling out "Kawan! Kawan!", that's probably her -- as she calls everyone by the term 'kawan' for some unknown reason.
CHRISTINE WONG is a girl who can't snap her fingers.
ARI ADZMIN is a poet who writes about all the things that make life mundane. That makes like bleed the circumstantially beautiful prose of events that is within it's monotony and misfortunes.
ALEX VOROSMARTHY is just a man who wants to say what he never got to say.
ISAAC SE HOO is an engineering student who has no idea what he's doing.
EZRA PRITIVI is morbid and comical, part time radiohead preacher, full time internet shitposter.
ROS MAIZURA is an aspring filmmaker and loves throwing shade in the form of poems.
MARK CHEONG plucks faint strings of poetry out of the air, usually while driving or jogging.
BELVEEN SINGH is the Emo Guy who makes memes, does stand up comedy and now poetry apparently.
Hosted by MELIZARANI T.SELVA
COVER CHARGE: RM18 (inclusive of one drink)
We would like to pay our featured acts and eventually afford to bring in other great poets of the world to our stage. Your donation will go a long way in helping the spoken word community do so. Gratitude to you.
