The leading lady of Malaysian theatre, Dato’ Faridah Merican, is set to take on on the titan of Chinese drama Tsao Yu’s masterpiece《雷雨》or Thunderstorm.
Set in Ipoh, this new version of Thunderstorm will see Carmen Soo taking on the role of Chou Fan-Yi, a world apart from her last role in the musical Cabaret. She is paired with award-winning veteran actor Patrick Teoh who plays Chou Pu-Yuan, the male patriarch.
The play also features Brian Chan (as Chou Ping), Tan Li Yang (as Chou Chung), Mark Beau de Silva (as Lu Kuei), Priscilla Wong (as Lu Shih-Ping / Lu Ma), Alvin Looi (as Lu Ta-Hai), Ho Lee Ching (as Lu Ssu-Feng) and many more.
At the heart of it, Thunderstorm is a drama about family, society and corruption. Chou Pu-Yuan is the head of a wealthy, successful and seemingly happy household. But a storm is gathering. For behind the veneer of respectability lies of a web of intrigue, and a dark family secret.
This production of Thunderstorm is dedicated to the late Mustafa Noor and the late Najib Nor director and costume designer of Ribut of 1985.
